Lamplighter books are beautiful. They look amazing on your shelf and just feel lovely in your hands. I know I am not supposed to judge a book by its cover, and I generally don’t. I have nothing against a mass market paperback. The words in the book are what I’m after. Good literature can be contained in any sort of package. BUT there is something to be said about beauty and I love how these lovely books make me feel!
I also love that Lamplighter books are old stories from a time when virtue, modesty, and etiquette were important. Something we seem to have lost in modern society. This particular novel was written in 1899. I love historical fiction but even more so when the book was actually written in the time it depicts. It adds another dimension when it is historical and contemporary to when it was written as opposed to being written in modern day by an author attempting to understand and recreate a time 100 years or more ago.
The Secret Bridge is the story of a speedy, unexpected marriage between a young girl and a sailor. He departs almost immediately and she is left to struggle to keep their marriage a secret from his family while he is away. He left her with the charge to befriend his family but not share who she is. Add in a long-standing family feud and the girl finding unexpected knowledge about her past, and this story is full of plenty of twists to keep anyone interested.
I really enjoyed this book. It was a lovely way to spend some relaxing mom-time. The story was beautifully written and engaging. I could picture every scene and felt the myriad of feelings with the main character throughout the story. For me, being able to picture the scenes and empathize with the characters is the measure of how well the story is written. This one certainly passed those tests!
Lamplighter Publishing strives to build Christian character one story at a time. They have searched out stories from the past, many that would otherwise be forgotten, that contain lessons of the importance of character qualities. The stories are all edited to adhere to the company’s Christian values. Throughout each story are woven character traits and Biblical truths to build up the next generation. The books are all published with and excellence in quality that reflects the excellence in character they are teaching.
In addition to books, Lamplighter also produces dramatic audios with the same values and Biblical truths. They are also home to Lamplighter Theater and The Guild. The Guild is an annual conference for students to explore and cultivate creative disciplines.
When you explore the Lamplighter website, you are likely to find many books you would like to own. If you are anything like me, you may quickly feel overwhelmed and not know where to start (The Secret Bridge would be a great place but there are plenty of others). A great option for building a library of these beautiful and uplifting books at a discount is to join their Book and Audio Club. You will be able to choose a plan based on how many books or audios you would like to receive in a month. You will then create a list of the titles you want in order of preference and you will receive them in that order. You can pause or cancel this subscription at any time.
I have had the pleasure of hearing Mark Hamby speak at a homeschool conference. His seminar audios and transcripts are available on the Lamplighter Publishing website as well, I encourage you to check those out!
