This audio drama was extremely well done. It pulled us right into the story and kept us on the edge of our seats. This is the story of an English boy who finds himself tied to an aristocratic French family in the middle of the French Revolution. His adventures involve not only escaping arrest and probable death himself but also attempting to aid and protect members of the family he had grown to love.
The voices, background sound effects, and music made us feel like we were right in the middle of the story. While the setting and conflict of this story are inherently disturbing, it is told in such a way that was not overly upsetting to my younger kids and opened a lot of topics for family discussion. My kids, ages 5, 7, and 11, all loved the audio. They were sad when it was over and are asking to get more audio dramas from Heirloom Audio Productions (which we will definitely be doing).
In the Reign of Terror is available in either MP3 download or physical CDs. Either choice includes a PDF of the Study Guide and the physical CDs also includes the MP3 download so you can start listening right away. The study guide is a wonderful addition to the CDs and can be used to create an entire history unit study from the story, or as a more casual family discussion guide. The guide begins with profiles of Maximilien Robespierre and Marie Antoinette which give more background on the setting of the story. That is followed by a series of questions for each of the tracks on the CDs. There are a variety of questions so you can choose those that best fit the age and ability of your children. There are questions that can be answered directly from the story, and questions that require more critical thinking and sometimes additional research. There are also vocabulary words listed for each track. Interspersed throughout the question section are Expand Your Learning boxes with additional background information, assignments, and/or questions to further expand thinking and application of the topics.
The Study Guide also includes a list of additional resources pertaining to the French Revolution, a Bible Study related to the topics in the story, and further background information on the French Revolution and Reign of Terror. All of these resources give you the ability to expand this story into as in depth of a study as you might wish and tailor it to a variety of ages.
