We are always on the lookout for a good read aloud and Imagine. . .The Great Flood by Matt Koceich from Barbour Publishing definitely fit the bill! How can you go wrong with a Bible adventure about Noah’s Ark? This book is just one in a series of Christian fiction books for middle-grade kids.
Corey doesn’t want to move, he thinks it is basically the worst thing that could happen to him. Until a bump on the head sends him into a world of giants, floods, and animals. He gets to know Noah and his sons and experiences animals up close and personal, but as the storm builds and the rains begin he finds himself the target of evil itself and constantly pursued and attacked by giants. Corey winds up in a series of seemingly impossible situations that test his faith on his wild adventure into the past.
The end of the story fast forwards a few months later and Corey has moved to his new home in a new city and adjusted well. He came away from his flood encounter with a much better perspective on life and its difficulties and an increased faith in God. The book never actually explains what happened to Corey and how or why he ended up in Biblical times or how he returned to the present. We can only assume the bump on his head knocked him unconscious resulting in a vivid dream or even vision. Either way, Corey certainly learned his lesson.
This book is the perfect reading level and length for my 3rd grader and interesting enough that my 12-year-old enjoyed it as well. We read it as a family and my 5-year-old also enjoyed it although he would not yet be able to read it on his own. It is a perfect family read-aloud but also a great option for children who are beginning to read chapter books on their own.
Here are my kids’ thought:
5-year-old Son says, “It was interesting that Corey’s new friend was named Noah.”
7-year-old Daughter, “It was interesting, I liked it.”
12-year-old Daughter says, “I would really like to read the other Imagine book that is about the Ten Plagues.”
They are very succinct children but they really enjoyed the book and were always asking me to read it or to read “one more chapter.”
Imagine. . .The Great Flood by Matt Koceich is a wonderful, imaginative, Bible-based, historical fiction novel that is great for family reading or for individual reading for kids up to about 12-years-old. It is full of great lessons in trials and faith. You really can’t go wrong adding this to your library!
I look forward to reading more of the Imagine…. series with my kids in the near future.
