Classical Conversations Cycle 3 JUNIOR Activity Book {Review}

My family is heading into our seventh year in a Classical Conversations community. I’m always keeping my eyes out for a little something extra to use for memory work review but I’ve also learned it is best to keep things very simple. This year I found a great solution with the Classical Conversations Cycle 3 JUNIOR Activity Book from A Journey Through Learning Lapbooks.

JUNIOR Classical Conversations Cycle 3 Learning Activity Book Weeks 1-24

We are going into our seventh year with Classical Conversations and it is a great fit for our family. This year we have one child in the Challenge program (Jr. High and High School age) and two children in Foundations. My oldest also participated in the Essentials program for the last two years (an afternoon intensive writing and grammar program for those in grades 4-6).

This activity book is designed to be used in conjunction with the Classical Conversations Foundations program which is the morning class for children ages 4-11. Foundations covers History, Geography, Science, Math, English Grammar, Latin, and a Timeline. The weekly community days also include an art lesson, a science project, presentation time, and review period.

This is a great resource that provides a simple way to give your kids some extra review of what they learn on community day. You don’t NEED to add anything to the CC curriculum except a math and a language arts program and it is really best to keep things at home very simple, especially if you are new to the program. Many parents want a little something extra or a good way to review the memory work other than reciting it. This activity book is perfect for that! It gives your child a page to write out their memory work for each subject without over-complicating things.

Each week includes:

  • A history coloring page with the topic of that week’s memory sentence to trace
  • A lined page to write the history sentence
  • A map to label or color in that week’s geography
  • Latin to trace
  • A page to write the English grammar rule
  • Skip counting to trace
  • Science words to trace
  • A page to practice the week’s art concept

The suggested way to use this activity book is to print out all of the pages and put them in a binder. Then, take a page protector and cut off the side with the holes, making a sleeve that will slip on and off the pages. Use this sleeve over the pages and dry erase markers to trace the memory work each day until the last day of the week when your child will actually write in the page with pencil. This way you can practice everything every day without printing extra pages.

I had planned to use this only with my 5-year-old. A Journey Through Learning Lapbooks also has a Classical Conversations Cycle 3 Activity Book intended for older kids with smaller lines and less tracing/more filling in. I had thought I would get the other book for my 7-year-old who is on the border between the two age-wise. After looking through the Junior Activity Book, I’ve decided to just use it with both of them for now. If it seems she needs more challenge I will get her the other activity book.

I am not using the dry erase method on these. Instead, I will have them complete two pages per day. We go over the memory work as a family and play the CD in the car so I don’t feel like they need to trace it all daily but I love the opportunity for them to do something different for review. The beauty of this being a PDF product is that you can adjust it to fit your family!

Also, I printed the first copy double sided but then realized that one of my kids would have a hard time with his hand hitting the rings when doing the back side of the paper so I printed his one sided. It can work either way.

**Note: This Journal is mean to be used IN CONJUNCTION with the Classical Conversations program, none of the memory work is included in the journal you will need to own the Foundations Guide to correctly complete the work.
